How to read EU reach in the Meta Ad Library
· 5 min · Intentos
Since the Digital Services Act, every ad shown in the European Union comes with transparency data in the Meta Ad Library. It is the closest thing to a public performance signal you can get for a competitor’s ad, if you know how to read it.
What Meta publishes
Open an ad’s details in the Ad Library and look for the EU transparency section. For ads shown in the EU you find the total reach in the EU, and a breakdown of that reach by country, age range and gender. Ads shown in the United Kingdom carry a similar UK breakdown.
- Reach counts unique accounts that saw the ad, not impressions.
- Ads that only ran outside the EU and UK have no reach figure.
- The breakdown shows where the advertiser found an audience, not only where they targeted.
From reach to an estimated spend
Meta does not publish spend for commercial ads. You can estimate it from reach and a CPM, the cost per thousand. The simple version is reach divided by 1,000, multiplied by the CPM you expect in that market. Divide by the days the ad has run to get a daily figure.
Example with made up numbers: an ad with 150,000 EU reach and a CPM of 9 euros comes to about 1,350 euros. If it has run for 60 days, that is about 22 euros a day.
Where the estimate goes wrong
Reach is not impressions, so frequency is missing: an advertiser showing the same people an ad five times pays for all five. CPMs differ by country, season and placement. Treat the estimate as a ranking tool to find which ads get real budget, not as a bill.
Doing it for a whole page at once
Opening ad details one by one is slow. The Intentos Chrome extension reads the same published figures for every ad on the page, applies your CPM and lets you sort by total spend, daily spend, reach or days running. Spend is always marked as an estimate.
